Our History

In June 1970, Eliam Chinese Baptist Church was born out of the desire to establish a church outside of the once concentrated downtown Chinatown area. The rented church basement was located in the Victoria Park Avenue and Lawrence Avenue East area.

From 1975 - 77, the property at the present location was bought and the main church building erected. The church name became North York (Chinese) Baptist Church in 1978. The English-speaking congregation (ESC) was started in 1981 with 40 young people led by Chinese-speaking congregation members with a burden for English-speaking ministry. By God's grace, the church gradually grew. Its emphasis was on worship, prayer, teaching, fellowship and evangelism. Brothers and sisters learned, served, fellowshipped and witnessed the love of our Lord Jesus Christ.

In May 2005, we purchased 685 Sheppard Ave. E. We are looking forward to developing it into a multi-purpose Church use facility for many activities such as worship services, lectures, large meetings, sports, etc.

Today, NYCBC ESC strives to fulfill God's purposes for His church on earth. Jesus said in Matthew 28:18 - 20:

"All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age."
